The Disaster In Japan

As you probably already know, Japan was recently hit with one of the largest recorded earthquakes ever. The following tsunami destroyed towns, and left thousands of people homeless. The disaster in Japan affected marine life, too.

"While many animals have been affected by the disaster in Japan, the impact of the radiation appears to be less harmful than we expected." ( Global Animal ) Contaminated water is flowing into the Pacific Ocean, but since ocean water is full of potassium and calicum, it lowers the chance of an animal's body taking up radioactive particles instead. (sciencemag.org)

It appears that the greatest harm to wildlife was the tsunami itself. It is estimated that tens of thousands of costal birds were killed when the wave hit. " The endangered Midway Atoll albatross population was severely affected by the tsunami, but will survive as a species. The impact on other endangered species is unknown at this time." ( Global Animal )

The disaster in Japan did not just affect humans. If you are interested in helping the animals of Japan, www.globalanimal.org is asking for donations for animal rescue there. We need to remember this disaster did not just effect humans, but wildlife as well.

Sister Wright

Sister Wright is my sunday school teacher at my church, who is currently in the hospital. She has been battling cancer for a year and a half and is coming to the end of her fight. She has been a wonderful friend to me for a very long time. She is like a grandmother to me and I will miss her terribly when she's gone. She gave more than she probably realized, from the smallest hug to her largest gift. She always made me feel better,and I could never be angry around her. She was more than a teacher,she was a friend, a person who could love me, almost family. I hope she knows their are many that will miss her terribly once she has passed away. My hope is that she knows she is loved dearly. I love you Sister Wright.

A biography of the Earth

4.4 billion years ago, the earth was a toxic place with no hope of life. Then, a giant planet called Thea crashed into the earth. Over millions of years, our oceans formed. Plants were formed. Life started forming in the oceans. Over millions of years people and land animals formed. But what does this have to do the environment? Well, first let's look at the movie Wall-e. The fat caption said the ship had been in space for 700 years before Wall-e discovered a plant. So they all went home and lived happily ever after. Time for the non-fiction version. 1,000 years later- first plant found. 3,000 years later- all the trash cleaned up. 3,500 years later- Enough oxygen for human life. 4,000 (or more) years later- human life sustainable( finally). The point here is that it's going to take a while to clean up the earth if we mess it up. We only have one planet sustainable for human life. We need to keep it this way, or we're all going to die, either in space, or here on earth.

I'm Back!

After a year of guilty feelings about neglecting my blog so badly, I'm back. I have a lot of things to post about (like my new enviromental club at school a.k.a the Green Team) and more cool stuff. So keep checking for more information on that "cool stuff."
