Plastic Bags in California

Good news! One of our California State Legistators, Loyd E Levine, is trying to make it so you have to pay to use plastic bags. If that is passed, you will have to pay 15cents to use a plastic bag. This is to encourage people to use paper or bring their own bags. This could really help save tooons of oil! Here is a link to his website so you can write to him and tell him you support the idea.

This is Addison, signing off.

Hi Addison

hey I recycle my plastic bags.. is that going to be considered--- they started using plastic to not waste paper... now they do not want to use plastic... and some people cannot afford cloth bags... or need so many bags... and some people with a small income.. can they afford 15 cents per bag;... I am not sure what the answer is... but charging 15 cents seems outrageous to me...
I do enjoy your information... my grandaughter Allie is also very worried about our planet... you two should email each other...

it is interesting that plastic replaced paper to save trees and now cloth will replace plastic to save oil. we need to take these steps, and I for one will commit to changing my habits in this area. thanks for keeping us all informed.

Hi Addison
I always use my left over grocery bags for my trash. I didn't know that it makes a difference, thanks for the information.

I think I will switch to paper bags too. I have always liked them better anyway--more uses later. Thanks for the tips.

Addison, this is a great blog! I learned this past week that the plastic bags break down in the landfills, but never disintegrate and become part of the soil--just very tiny specs of plastic which fill our soil and get into the bodies of plants and animals. At least a paper bag becomes soil again. But, reusable bags are a great choid for shopping--Trader Joes has some cute ones, and there are lots of others at www.reusablebags.com

Keep up the great work!

Could you tell us what “petroleum distillates” are? And how this process relates to gasoline and plastics and soap? And if we don’t make plastics and soap from those portions of the oil what do you think we should be making?

You have a very cool blog. As I read this last post it made me think of these two websites I saw recently. One about the ocean of plastic floating in the Pacific.

http://www.mindfully.org/Plastic/Ocean/Ocean-Plastic-Landfill-Algalita1nov02.htm

And an art piece by Chris Jordan showing a photo of two million plastic beverage bottles, the number used in the US every five minutes. You can find on a google image search.
